Gower-Simpson

So the most challenging part of my family tree is definitely my Maternal grandparents. It seems i have fallen at the first hurdle with so many things to learn. However in just a few days i have already learnt so very much.
Mum always knew she had been adopted but either knew very little or just didn't really want to divulge. From stories she told us she was 8 when she was adopted by Ellen and Edwin Charlesworth and she grew up at 34 Clarence Road in Hillsborough, which ironically was a hop, skip and a jump away from where she was born.
She had 6 siblings and we still are not sure whether any of them were put up for adoption too. She talked about a childrens home near Infirmary Road in Sheffield but as of yet i do not know where this is.
So research as told me that Mums real Mum and Dad were Harry and Rose Gower, Rose being Simpson when they were married the 19th May 1934 at St Bartholomews Church in Sheffield. Harrys father was James Butler Gower, a Metal smith, who was deceased and Roses father was Ambrose Simpson a Waggon Painter. They both resided at 50 Kelvin Street which is the site where Kelvin Flats would later be developed. Harry is shown as being a widower with an occupation of Furnaceman. The witnesses at the wedding were James Leeson Gower and Catherine Gray.
Harry and Rose went on to have 8 children although Mum only ever mentioned 7. This was probably due to the fact that the last child, Valerie, die at a few months old and non of the brothers and sisters may have knew about her, especially if they were all adopted out.
In June 1945 my grandfather committed a crime against my grandmother. He allegedly stabbed her and subsequently spent 21 months in prison. He would have left prison sometime in 1947 and shortly after he was released my grandmother passed away at the age of 35. It seems that the knife wound she suffered in 1945 cause a strangulated hernia of the diaphragm. There was an inquest into her death as this newspaper article tells.

I have no idea when Harry died. He was born in 1902 so doubt he would be alive today. I guess he would probably have gone on to marry again. I don't even know if any of the children stayed with him. The youngest child Valerie must have died whilst he was in prison. The other children were:

Doreen Gower 1934

Rita Gower 1936

Iris Gower1937

Irene Gower (my mum) 1938

Gordon B Gower 1940

Sandra Gower 1942

Michael A Gower 1944

Valerie Gower Jun 1945

We have an address and telephone number for Iris and my sister is going to call her tomorrow so we may get some more answers very soon!
